How do I get my horse to change leads in a canter?

Ok I have a ten year old Arabian gelding that I am working with. Sometimes when he goes into a cantor he will be in the wrong lead (my fault entirely)
Anyways, the only way that you can get him to change leads is to slow him down to a trot and start all over.
I have tried many times without success to get him to change leads while he is cantering but its not working very well, so any suggestions?

Can I attach a car battery to an electric fence wire just by the leads?

I am not sure if I can connect it with original box.
